May is for Penstemons

The Penstemons are gearing up to bloom in NC. This is one of my favorite times of the gardening year. Husker's Red (shown) and Dark Towers are two dark-leaved Penstemons rarely damaged by deer. Penstemons attract bees and hummingbirds. They retain a colorful basal rosette in winter for year-round interest.
