This is the Little Bluestem chosen for the High Line in New York. Little Bluestem is a charming small native grass great for edging or front to mid border. Different cultivars have slighty different colors schemes, all enchanting throughout the year. 'Standing Ovation' is known for its early color of blue green, with red-orange and grays in its foilage, followed by a burgundy and red-orange fall color. Most bluestems turn a winter shade of honey to copper.

Little Bluestems thrives in full sun, medium to dry, well-drained and have excellent drought tolerance once established. Little Bluestem cultivars have not spread by seed in my garden. They are distinguishable by their various colors, all amazing, and their ability to not flop if planted in full sun.

If planted in full sun and not hit by a snow or tough storm, Little Bluestem cultivars will likely remain standing throughout winter, adding a graceful highlight to your winter garden and feeding the birds. Cut back in March to promote full new growth.

Little Bluestem is the host to several butterflies and moths, and its seed feeds the birds. Bonus, it is deer and black walnut resistant.
