Native to streambanks, roadsides, and tallgrass prairies of the U.S.,  Panicum cultivars are admired by gardeners worldwide. 'Northwind' has been hailed in gardens across Europe and gardening magazine references abound with tips for growing it outside of its natural range. We are lucky to be able to plant it with no fuss.

'Northwind' Switchgrass grows to about 4.5' tall, 5.5' when in bloom, this upright, clean vertical accent is striking in the garden.

These grasses grow best in full sun in well-draining soil. 'Northwind' holds its upright shape throughout winter making a lovely winter accent. Cut back hard in early spring to promote new flush growth.

Switchgrasses are host plants to the Common Wood-Nymph and various Skipper butterflies. The seeds feed the birds and small mammals. The grasses provide cover.

Panicums are great for erosion control, are drought tolerant and deer resistant, black walnut resistant, salt resistant, and tolerate occasional flooding.
